Everybody is talking about the economic crisis and almost everyone has an opinion about it. Everyday it is in the primetime news. As for me and everybody it has affected all employees you can name of. In my hospital they can only afford to give us only half of the Christmas bonus. Well at least we have one. The bad side of this is everybody is complainig and we can't do anything about it. Moving to a better environment or work is not the wisest decision at this stage because the employers know about employment scenario.
Being Filipino I am used to bad times and I have no choice but to live with it, whether it is a good or bad working environment. We always rationalize that we are lucky to have our job and to work in a health environment wherein there are no cutbacks.
Happy Christams to all.
I'm in Cebu at the moment savoring my annual holiday so to say. I am lucky to be home this time for New Year and I thought that my annual leave won't be approved. My airfare was for free after accumulating some mileage from Singapore Airlines. I am due to fly back to Dublin on the 2nd of February but I am anticipating a bleak environment. Why I am saying that....Its bloody winter!!!!!! While most Irish economist have predicted that the worse of the recession will be greatly noticed in 2009. Why would I be affected?? I don't have shares with Lehmann Brothers or AIG. I don't have any mortgages. No car loans. Though I have some bank loans and credit card balances but these accounts can be settled through prompt payments. And I work in the health sector and so far we haven't felt the crunch obviously. Though we only received 50% of our annual bonus and that explains the recession. And let me mention that some of my kababayans in Ireland especially in the construction sector have lost their ...
This movie has been a topic of conversation among our peers whether pinoys, Indians or Irish colleagues. Many hailed and enjoyed this movie. I for one would consider it just another ordinary movie. It did not click to me...it just so happened that it was a British production and any Bollywood producer or director can slam that movie. But the academy loves the underdog and with all the other movie nominees it was the best choice for me and even for the choice of the Best Director. Danny Boyle is one of my favorite directors, his credits include Trainspotting, The Beach, and 28 Days Later (which was very cool!!). The British born actor playing the slumdog Jamal was from the series Skins (only available in the UK area) and he played the role well in Slumdog Millionaire which was different from his character in Skins as a sex-crazed Muslim teen and having a homosexual best friend.
Going back to our peer conversation, our Indian colleagues did not approve well ...
I am not a fan or an avid supporter of Manny Pacquiao. I do admire his boxing skills but I don't think that entering politics is the right place for him even if he has extended his hand to help his fellow nationals with scholarships and donations.
It was my first time to experience the thrill of a Paqcuiao match through a friend's PPV (Pay per view) subscription. It was like doing a night duty. The match was at 4 am (UK/Irish time) so I decided to sleep and wake up at 330 for a coffee cap before watching the match. I decided to support the man from General Santos and I always cringe everytime he is interviewed be it with CNN or Sky Sports. Of course the man himself does not claim to be a genius. As for that support (of course Pacman does not need one from me) I was earnestly wishing while Sir Tom Jones and Martin Nievera were singing their respective national anthem that he should WIN this match against the cocky and over con...
I was very eager to see the film Angels and Demons when it hit the cinemas last friday. As a film it was very fast paced and and you have this feel of the usual suspense thriller cliche'. For those who have read the book, there were some changes made but it did not affect the entire story. Of course they have to be more updated with the present scientific research that occured in Switzerland last year. In the movie, the Camerlengo was an Irish Monsignor and the special relationship he had with the deceased pope was not emphasized though it made a major conflict in the book. And Vittoria Vettra's relationship with his murdered mentor was not as well.
The way I saw it was that, the screenplay and Ron Howard may have made some major adjustments so as to appease the Vatican. Because they angered the Vatican offcials with their previous movie. The book and the movie had the same outlook that demonized the Church's past but it glorified the faith of the present Church.
In my limited knowled...
The Europeans especially the Brits and the Irish are very busy for the European Parliament, Parliamentary seats and their local council elections. The immigrants like us are allowed to vote for the local council elections...you cannot have this privilege as a foreigner in the Philippines. To the common knowledge of all Filipinos the parliamentary system is very different compared to our presidential system. If my fellow filipinos back home are watching BBC World News then they would notice the huge difference in the House of Commons (the British Parliament)
I am not a qualified political analyst but I don't have to be one in order to comment about it. Personally, I prefer the parliamentary system because it is working well in Europe and I can see it working well under my nose for having lived in Ireland for eight bloody years. But, will it work in the Philippines? I don't think so. We have been using the Presidential/Senate/Congress type of government afte...

June just flew by...the Irish tax man began deducting a total of 44% bloody percent of our salary so as to help the Irish economy. That's why I am bit stingy at the moment...no massive shopping or holiday spree for me as of now. We pinoys celebrated the Philippine Independence day here in Ireland and it was time for cultural assertion once again. Lots of Pacman jackets and Francis M t-shirts running around. Last year it poured down rain because Judy Ann Santos sang. This year we came prepared with tents and gazebos. We eventually have our first Philippine Ambassador to Ireland after 8 years of asking the PGMA government. But at the moment the honorable ambassador is still looking for his office space. His last posting was in Hawaii as the Philippine General Consul.
Now its July, and halfway through the...
Former President Corazon Aquino passed away. For me she is the mother of "reclaimed" Philippine democracy when People Power deposed the dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
When I was a sixth grader in Don Bosco Cebu, my father relayed the news that Sen. Benigno Aquino has been assassinated in Manila International Airport (now named after him). I did not know who the man was and I did not know what a senator was. That time the Senate and the House of Congress was suppressed due to Martial Law. The Salesians at that time was pro Benigno Aquino and years later in 1986, I was a second year high school student when People Power in EDSA happened. Millions of people armed with rosaries and prayers forced Ferdinand Marcos to be exiled in Hawaii.
Corazon "Cory" Aquino, widow of the assassinated senator became our president. The Senate and the House of Congress was reinstated. We had the only plebiscite that convened the Philippine Constitutional Commis...
